Tooling Checks Before a New Machine Arrives
Confirm the delivered machine configuration, complete assemblies and first-job support before tooling ships.
A machine model name is not a complete tooling specification. Order against the confirmed build and the first jobs planned for it.
Get the build-specific requirements
Obtain the purchased configuration, layout and relevant OEM instructions. Confirm the spindle or turret interface, retention requirements, tool-size and weight limits, magazine restrictions and coolant options.
For a turning center, verify the stations and driven-tool configuration being supplied. Do not assume a brochure image shows the machine you ordered.
Haas's toolholder reference, for example, warns against incorrect taper and pull-stud types and directs users to machine-specific layout information. Resolve these details with the machine builder before ordering holders.
Work back from the first parts
Give the tooling supplier the drawings, materials, operations, fixtures and access requirements for the initial work. Identify which existing tools can transfer and which assemblies must be purchased.
Review each cutting tool, holder, extension, adapter and retention component together. Check reach, clearance, storage restrictions and the permitted operating conditions for the actual assembly.
Assign the small items too
Confirm who supplies collets, screws, keys, spare hardware and tool measurement or presetting equipment. Record quantities and delivery dates. Do not leave the machine builder and distributor each assuming the other has included them.
Keep substitutions visible and approved before shipment. One unavailable adapter can prevent an otherwise complete package from being used.
Prepare the first acceptance run
Choose a representative part. Name the people responsible for programming, setup, applications support and inspection. Agree the required results and list unresolved questions before the commissioning visit.
After the run, retain the accepted assembly list, settings, inspection results and remaining actions. Give the next shift enough information to repeat the setup without relying on the people who attended commissioning.
